Fish Species > Giant Snakehead

   Snakehead, Giant. (Channa micropeltes). Max weight 10 kg/ 22lb. Predatory. The Giant Snakehead is a widespread predator species throughout the Asian continent occurring in the Mekong and Chaophraya river basins in Thailand in addition to Cambodia, Laos the Malay Peninsula and the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. This aggressive member of the Channidae (snakeheads) family of fishes subsists on a diet of fish, frogs, snakes and crustaceans preferring to attack from ambush. An extremely streamlined predator with an elongated snake-like body with a protruding lower jaw this ravernous predator favours areas with submerged aquatic vegetation and structure from which it can launch its attacks. The Giant Snakehead ranges in colour from black to purple and in many cases black/ green with bold white stripes on its flanks and is one of Thailand’s most fearsome predatory fish.
